Fritz Handler peered warily through the little black grid separating him from the priest who was to hear his confession. True, the old priest seemed kindly and sympathetic and not entirely awash in patriotic fervor. Still, it was quite a leap from there to assuming that Fritz could trust him with his confession of murder, treason and madness.

But he had made his decision well before coming here. He took a deep breath and plunged in.

“Bless me Father, for I have sinned.”
