El-Ossbar was not old enough to remember the days when it was easy being a vampire.  He was, after all, only eight-hundred years old.  But his “mother,” Bet-Sydden, was one of the ancients.  She had become a vampire almost thirty-five hundred years ago and at the time of her unfortunate demise last winter, she was the sitting Queen Mother of the Council of Shadows.  Her untimely death only highlighted the danger that El and his kind were facing these days.  If such a wise and powerful vampire as Bet-Sydden could so easily make a mistake and feed on a bad host, what chance did the rest of them have?

Any vampire sired less than two thousand years ago woke up in this dangerous new world and became well educated on how to best survive in it.  But before the Night of Light, as the Council had ominously dubbed the crucifixion of Christ, there was no such thing as an infected host.  Even the Chosen could be hunted in relative safety, although they were not a preferred meal.  The Jews may have provided as much sustenance as any other race, but there were several drawbacks to feeding on them with any regularity.
